Mr. Watkins, being weary of his life as a city planner in Colorado, and having learned about photography and writing to some minor extent, undertook to travel abroad in the world and to record what he found in unusual places.
We toured the large urban wilderness in the midst of the developed area. We drove to the Griffith Observatory, which was opened in 1935. From there we made a sunset climb of Mount Hollywood to see the lights of the Los Angeles basin all around us.
