It rained all night the next night, and in the morning the
high peaks were covered with snow. I
hiked up the valley of the West Dolores River into the Lizard Head Wilderness
area. Ragged, low-hanging clouds covered the tops of the highest peaks. As I
climbed, I could hear a lone bull elk bugling above me in the forest, and the
amount of snow on the ground increased the higher I hiked. At the lake, the
ground was covered with two inches of wet snow.
Because of the low clouds, the summits of the highest peaks were not
visible. When I turned to return, I saw
that the sky was black, and soon a storm of heavy grapple struck. Near the end
of the hike, thunder boomed above me and it poured rain.
